Brew-Kus: The Bev-Wich Shop in Makati City

May 24, 2012
When I was introduced to Brew-Kus The Bev-Wich Shop located at Valero St. in Makati City it feels as if it was an answered prayer.  I am one of those who are bitten by the milk tea craze and while most milk tea shops rocked my world, my usual complaint is that not most of them offers something on the menu other than drinks.

Brew-Kus aptly tagged as The Bev-Wich Shop offers both beverages and sandwich alongside other dishes worth raving about. I do not usually go to Makati area but restaurants and cafes such as Brew-Kus will always be worth driving Makati for.

My first visit at Brew-Kus was courtesy of the Breakfast Magazine's Breakfast Club and fellow foodies Spanky Enriquez and Mhel of Certified Foodies Blog.  The fact that we were still full because of previous foodie engagement we had at Sugarleaf does not discount the fact that we still did enjoy what we had feasted on at Brew-Kus.

One of the many things that endears me to Brew-Kus is the beautiful interior. A big space which is subtly divided into three sections which features different vibes depending on the diner's preferences.  Upon entering the shop, the first section exudes the usual coffee shop ambiance. Cozy little couches, comfortable chairs, and coffee tables made the section a great place to hang out while sipping your favorite beverage on the menu and munching on some light snacks which Brew-Kus also offers.

The middle part which faces the bar area where the beverages are prepared is the casual dining area. Perfect for group pf people wanting to devour full meal while having a good time. The section at the far corner of the shop is the dimly lit fine dining area section which can be perfect for people who is on a business meeting or a date. Every section exudes comfort which goes perfectly well with the kind of food that Brew-Kus offers.

Most of the beverages listed on the menu pique my interest but since it was my first time at Brew-Kus, I chose one of their best sellers, Almond Tea Latte (Php 100), large size with full sugar and nata de coco as add on. The distinct taste of the almond was very apparent, I would order for it again but not in the near future I guess.I would be very much interested in trying out other beverages on the menu to see what can really suit my palate.

Crisp Mushroom Ravioli (Php 180) was the first dish that we had feasted on. It can be compared to fried ravioli yes, only it uses wanton as its coverings. I love the crispiness of it, but it was its shitake mushroom filling with cream cheese which made this dish interesting for me. they also have the spinach variant on the menu and I think it sounds equally interesting.

The Grilled Veg & Mozzarella (Php 250) is part of the Gourmet Sandwiches on their menu but it looks like bruschetta for me. Nevertheless, the dish was perfect. I cannot make what vegetables were actually there but I am sure that there were slices of eggplants which lends a subtle innate savory sweetness to it especially that it was topped with melted mozzarella.

If there is one thing that blew me away among the dishes it was definitely the Wild Mushroom Pasta (Php 250). The aroma of the white truffle oil was pleasantly suffocating you could almost taste it by inhaling the aroma alone. Its cream sauce of shitake and button mushroom perfectly enveloped every strand of the pasta making each bite downright flavorful. Thin slices of prosciutto serves as its crown lends an additional savory kick to the entire dish.

Truth be told, it was one of the best pastas I've had in years and that alone is enough reason for me to visit Brew-Kus again.

Shrimply Loaded (Php 250) sandwich was also served. The name was a dead giveaway as this sandwich is packed with plump shrimps sauteed in asparagus, garlic, cream, and parmesan on a bed of crisp lettuce sandwich between slices of ciabatta bread. Not really my favorite but it was worth trying.

Resident chef of Brew-Kus, Chef Sheilla made a demo on how to concoct a perfect beer batter for fish and fries. After the demo, we feasted on the Beer Battered Fish & Chips which got me raving for its divine crispiness and lightness.  The tartar dip went perfectly well with the fish but it can also do without it since the fish was already flavorful on its own.

We were told that they were planning on revamping the menu soon but it is good to know that the dishes we feasted on will remain. Brew-Kus really impressed me in so many different level. Had it been located along within Ortigas area, I could probably see myself visiting everyday.  The food were awesome, the ambiance, fantastic.

Brew-Kus is a beautiful bend on the usual beverage shops that we have these days since it offers variety on their menu including sensible dishes which most of their competitors lack.
