When Autumn Fades Fast: The Short Stay of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte in Manila

🧡 Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is a Warm Hug in a Cup

If you’re a coffee enthusiast like me, you know there’s one drink that signals the cozy season has arrived — the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. Every year, I wait for that magical moment when “Pumpkin is in” finally appears on Starbucks Philippines’ Facebook page. This year, that long-awaited announcement dropped on September 30, and I swear I could almost smell the cinnamon and nutmeg through my screen.

Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte returns to Manila — and disappears too soon. A coffee lover’s heartfelt take on savoring every sweet, fleeting sip.

I rushed to my nearest Starbucks the very next day. My heart fluttering, wallet ready, and taste buds already tingling with nostalgia. Autumn might not exist in Manila, but the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) makes it feel like fall, even under the tropical sun. For a very few blissful days, I had my fill: the Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte for humid afternoons, the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino Blended Beverage when I needed something playful, and my all-time favorite — the Hot Pumpkin Spice Latte with an extra dash of cinnamon.

That last one hits differently. It’s the kind of drink that warms you from the inside out. Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte is always comforting, familiar, and wrapped in the aroma of nostalgia. My mom and I used to share it together. She loved it even more than I did, and every sip now feels like a quiet conversation with her. It's sweet, soothing, and yet fleeting. Maybe that’s why I chase that first sip every year. It’s not just coffee. It’s memory, comfort, and love in a cup.

But just as I was settling into my short-lived autumn fantasy, it happened. Two weeks later, every Starbucks store I checked across Metro Manila was out of Pumpkin Spice. I went from branch to branch — from Makati to Quezon City — only to be greeted by the same bittersweet words: “Sorry, ma’am, it’s sold out.”

It's heartbreaking, really.

Out of desperation and hoping against all hope that I will get a positive response, I messaged Starbucks Philippines’ Facebook page, hoping it was just a temporary shortage. Their polite reply: “Our Pumpkin Spice beverages are available from September 30 until supplies last.”

Until supplies last. It lasted two weeks. Two. Short. Weeks.

🍂 When Good Things Don’t Last Long

Just like the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte season, some of life’s best moments are fleeting.

I won’t lie — I felt an unreasonable sadness. It wasn’t just about the drink. It was about how something I loved, waited for, and looked forward to all year could disappear so fast. But isn’t that just like life?

Beautiful things rarely stay long. The best sunsets fade in minutes. The sweetest mangoes only ripen for a short summer. The people we love sometimes move away or grow into different versions of themselves.

The Pumpkin Spice Latte, in its fleeting glory, reminded me of this: the transience of joy doesn’t make it less meaningful — it makes it precious.

Maybe the PSL isn’t meant to be an everyday comfort. Maybe it’s meant to remind us that moments, like flavors, are best appreciated because they end.

So yes, my beloved PSL is gone too soon this year. But instead of sulking, I’m holding onto that first sip. The one that felt like a warm hug from a season that doesn’t exist here, yet somehow exists in my heart.

While I wait for its return next year (hopefully longer than two weeks, Starbucks!), I’ll seek little “pumpkin spice moments” elsewhere: a book I can’t put down, an unexpected laugh with a friend, or a quiet coffee morning before my part of the world wakes up.

And with the holidays on the horizon, I might chase the Starbucks Holiday Drinks and join the sticker-collecting tradition too. I know they’ll be fleeting—but maybe that’s the magic. Their brief stay turns simple sips and moments into tiny treasures worth savoring.
