Quick Grub at Wee Nam Kee Philippines, Serendra The Fort, Bonifacio Global City

April 18, 2013
My mom recently tagged me along to Wee Nam Kee in Serendra, Fort Bonifacio Global City for a quick grub before heading to a scheduled business meeting with client. We are up for a big dinner that day but the thought of Hainanese Chicken was too enticing to ignore, so I gave in.

As a Singaporean restaurant in Manila, Wee Nam Kee is known for their Hainanese Chicken and the Hainanese Rice. I know a lot of foodie friends who raved about this restaurant so even if I already have few favorites at hand, I gave Wee Nam Kee a shot.

Their branch at Serendra is decent enough in terms of space but it can get really jam packed during lunch time which is a good thing because it clearly translate that what they are offering is something good. I am not sure if it's the same case during dinner time.

We decided to try Wee Nam Kee's basic meal set of their signature Hainanese Chicken served with Hainanese Rice. One has the option to go for the roasted variant or the steamed variant. We chose to have one of each so that we can both try. I appreciate that the condiments are readily available in every table for the customer's use. I am crazy about ginger and Wee Nam Kee's ginger sauce is one of the best I have tried. Hooray for the unlimited servings!

My mom had the roasted variant which she enjoyed to bits. We love how the skin has a subtle texture of crispiness while the meat was downright flavorful. I on the other hand also enjoyed my steamed Hainanese Chicken. I love how savory every morsel of the chicken was which goes perfectly well with the ginger sauce.

Each bite was tender and succulent without the overwhelming distinct taste of the chicken. The flavor only goes to show that the chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly unlike in any other Singaporean restaurants that failed to impress me with their Hainanese Chicken.

Each set meal comes with a serving of Hainanese Rice which calls for a celebration in itself because of its flavorful flair. Rarely do I encounter a Hainanese Rice that captures the flavor of the chicken perfectly. This alone proves that Wee Nam Kee is doing a great job with their rendition of all things Hainanese.

Now the downside of our simple albeit lovely lunch transpired when we were served the Lechon Macau. After being blown away by their Hainanese chicken and rice, their Lechon Macau was a let down. For the price of 200+ I was expecting more substantial dish in terms of taste and serving portion.

Instead, we were given a sorry serving of cold pork. We asked for it to be reheated and when it was given back to us, we were faced with the sadder version of what was originally served to us. It was decent enough as a garnished in some noodle dish but not as a main fare in one's plate. I asked the server if they do their Lechon Macau that way and I was just given a reverberating yes. I felt betrayed.

Had it not been for the Lechon Macau experience, it could have been a perfect lunch. The service was attentive without overbearingly so, the ambiance was fine. I guess I will go back at Wee Nam Kee for their Hainanese Chicken and to try some of their dishes. But I there isn't a snowball chance in the desert that I will order for their Lechon Macau again.

  1. The lechon macau looked like a pork chop. :| I haven't been to Wee Nam Kee, but I'm curious about their Hainanese Chicken. Must give time to visit this! ;)
