The Chocolate Kiss Cafe

September 14, 2011
First time I tasted the Devil’s Food Cake by The Chocolate Kiss Café ( ChoKiss) was at a friend’s birthday party and I was smitten by it.  For a while it played as one of my favorites.  It has been pretty popular among my foodie friends but they were adamant in pushing me to try the Kahlua Butter Cake which they think I would enjoy as well.

When a craving for Devil’s Food Cake hit me one day, my friend Glenn and I decided to visit The Chocolate Kiss Café for an afternoon tea.  I was dead set on getting a slice of the cake and had completely brushed off the idea of trying out all the other cakes.  I guess it’s just me, when I am craving for something, I got to have it.  I don’t want my opinion of the food to be affected just because I wasn’t able to get what I want to eat in the first place, so I knew that I could reserve our so-called-cake-taste-test at the café on some other days.  I just want to have that Devil’s Food Cake regal my palate, and satisfy my craving.

Then the inevitable thing happened.  Due to massive orders that happened that weekend, they run out of the Devil’s Food Cake.  Sweet dear heaven.  If you are a foodie like me, you’ll know what I mean when I say that it was heartbreaking.  Glenn was sure that the Kahlua Cake will somehow save the impending doom of unfulfilled craving, only to find out that the café run out of it as well.

Unsatisfied craving coupled with disappointment would be emotionally redundant, so I tried to be calm about it and let Glenn choose what cakes we could devour that afternoon.  After the food attendant repeats our orders, I smiled in spite of myself.

I was not expecting anything from the choices of cakes that will be served and it came as a shock to me that after servings of three different cakes, I have already forgotten about the Devil’s Food Cake.

First cake I tasted was the Dayap Chiffon Cake.  I’ve mentioned that I am not a fan of chiffon cake countless of times here in my blog, but there are few who made it to my exceptions list.  Chocolate Kiss Café’s Dayap Chiffon Cake made it to the list.

Creamy custard sandwiched in between layers of melt-in-your-mouth softness of chiffon cake covered by immaculate marshmallow frosting.  It’s not as if it’s not good enough, the candied dayap rind add a sweet yet distinct kick to it.

Their Sans Rival was definitely a hit to my palate.  Believe it or not, the best sans rival for me happens to be the one they sell at a funky burger joint called Burger Machine as it induced beautiful childhood memories. Yes, it was nothing fancy, but it has always been a favorite.  I have tasted different sans rival before in search for the same satisfaction that Burger Machine sans rival could give me, to no avail. Surprisingly, ChoKiss sans rival put an end to my search.

In comparison, the ChoKiss version was definitely more substantial, but the taste was somewhat similar.  Burger Machine’s sans rival was too airy while Chokiss’ was packed with crisp meringue cashew nut wafers made more delicious with the butter cream and crushed cashew nuts.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake was also good but not really the type that I would crave for.  It was dense, not too sweet, and satisfying but it lacks the kick that I normally look for in my cheesecake.  The semi-sweet morsel of chocolate chips that were added to the classic New York style Cheesecake, making it a good treat, if not wonderful.

Just because I wasn’t able to have a slice of the Devil’s Food Cake that I was craving for does not mean that I wasn’t satisfied.  Those three cakes I have tasted were wonderful and lovely, albeit in different degree.  Nevertheless, I was a happy camper that afternoon.

I would definitely go back to try their savory offerings because I heard they serve not just lovely cakes and pastries, but meals as well.  Also, I have not tasted their Kahlua Butter Cake yet, so I can sense a return of a happy diner in the coming days.
