My visit recently at Broaster Chicken located at Robinsons Magnolia opened my eyes to a new world of well-loved comfort food, fried chicken. The fact that Broaster Chicken is all about providing healthy alternative to the usual sinfully delicious fried chicken, made me embraced this new world without hesitation.
Broaster Chicken is known for their crisp, light, and juicy chicken cooked through Broasting. Most of us may not be familiar with the term Broasting, I myself has little knowledge of it prior to my visit at Broaster Chicken. But if you have seen the episode of Travel Channel’s Man Vs. Food wherein the host, Adam Richmam featured Broasted Chicken, then you’ll have an idea. So yes, we are not talking about straight up fried chicken here, this post is all about the healthy option for the fried chicken lovers in all of us ~ broasted chicken.
By definition, Broasting a chicken is a cooking method made possible by using a pressure fryer and special condiments. This pressure fryer used in creating genuine broasted chicken is not just anything you could grab at any appliance store. It is an equipment manufactured by Broaster Company based in Beloit Wisconsin, licensor of Genuine Broaster Chicken. So, unless a store is using this Broaster Pressure Fryer from its license manufacturer, the authenticity of broasted chicken may be questionable.
For 60 years, Broaster Chicken is consider as American favorite. Other than its known quality, the availability which amounts to good exposure also plays a big role with this popularity. Broaster Chicken is known to be available in different restaurants worldwide because it is primarily considered as part of a menu rather than a restaurant on its own.
But as time goes by, building restaurants that bank mainly on the goodness of Broaster Chicken is then encouraged. After all, who does not want to feast on delicious fried chicken without the guilt since it is a healthier option? In the Middle East, there is this chain of fast food restaurant that is widely popular because of Broaster Chicken. This time, here in the Philippines, this chicken enjoyed by many in other countries can now be feasted on by Pinoys.
Broaster Chicken Philippines owners Byron and Aileen Cheung aim to share the wonders of health-friendly broasted chicken to Filipinos. Byron, who spent good number of years overseas, developed deep affinity to this different approach to fried chicken. This affinity turned into passion which he then shared to his wife Aileen.
Armed with intense desire to share the goodness of Broaster Chicken in the Philippines, the couple was then granted by the mother company the exclusive rights to open their own branch of Broaster Chicken here in Manila. Today, they are now planning to expand their business by opening branches in the near future. They are also open to the possibilities of business partnership to those who are interested.
So, we wonder, what is the difference between a broasted chicken from the usual fried chicken we are all used to? The answer lies in the process of cooking itself and the ingredients used. Broasted chicken is cooked in a sealed and pressurized environment that seals in the chicken’s natural juices. Special marinade which recipe is a company secret is used to develop the distinct taste of a broaster chicken in the process of cooking. Broaster Canola oil is also used in pressure frying the chicken to ensure that broasted chicken is way healthier than the usual chicken fried.
There are plenty of other things on the menu of Broaster Chicken at Robinsons Magnolia. Yet, if you are a man/woman on a mission, you will waste no time and grab broasted chicken right away. While there's nothing wrong with that, there are two meal starter on the menu that I suggest you try.
Broaster Chicken's Onion Rings (Php75) may not be as thick as we want it to be but it does boasts of flavor that can easily reel you in. Lightly battered and crisp, one may imagine it could be perfect to be stacked in between some mean burger, but regardless the absence, these onion rings is a star in itself. The Potato Wedges (Php75) on the other hand can be highly addicting. Its lightly crisp covering and soft potato meat inside is a delight to the bite. The flavor of the batter is equally noteworthy as it elevates the experience of eating an otherwise bland potato slices.
Broaster Chicken also offers Crispy Cajun Wings (Php210/3pcs., Php385/6pcs., Php745/12pcs.) Best eaten when hot, these chicken wings posses a certain kick that only Cajun spices could bring. It has the kind of in-your-face crispness that could rival with the main product which is understandably so, since these wings were also broasted to perfection.
There are two types of broasted chicken at Chicken Broaster; Genuine and Extra Crispy.
Genuine is technically the basic broasted chicken. Marinated with special seasoning then pressure fried to perfection. The skin is crisp enough to the bite while the meat is downright juicy owing to the fact that it was broasted.
The Extra Crispy on the other hand are double coated chicken making it well, extra crispy when broasted. There really is no big difference in terms of taste since the same marinade is used. The Genuine variant may be well and good enough for those who is not really crazy about downright crisp chicken, but for those who wants that crackling sound in their bites, this can be a good choice.
Broaster Chicken Genuine variant is priced at Php315/10pcs and Php595/10pcs. While Extra Crispy is priced at Php345/5pcs. and Php650/10pcs. Combo meals are also available and can be paired with rice, chicken tenders, or potato wedges. Prices range from Php90 to Php265.
Broaster Chicken in other countries does not serve gravy, but since we Filipinos are very appreciative of sauces accompanying our meal, they do offer it as well. According to the owners, since Broaster Chicken is all about providing healthy alternative to the usual fried chicken, they decided to developed a gravy recipe that is low in saturated fat, hence, healthy compared to the other ones available in the market.
I tried making a comparison between Broaster Chicken and other big players in field but I realized that I am doing all parties disservice. Because I only came into a conclusion that all of them have different winning characteristics which should not be overlooked rather, must be enjoyed. Broaster Chicken may be a neophyte here in our country, but for so many decades now, they are continuously creating a brand appreciated my many fried chicken lovers out there. For a brand to last that long enough, it must be doing something good.
However, I could stress that Broaster Chicken has strong points when it comes to serving good tasting and generous proportion of chickens which are healthy and reasonably priced. Based on my experience, I could say that serving portion at Broaster Chicken is downright impressive which makes this treat a bang for your buck. The fact that Broaster Chicken is very particular in serving food that are good for one's health is also a good factor to consider. That reason alone is good enough for me to come back at Broaster Chicken in Robinsons Magnolia and to recommend it to other foodies out there.
