Teppanyaki Dishes at Osaka Ohsho Philippines

April 04, 2015
Osaka Ohsho Philippines, one of the restaurants in Manila that serves the best tasting gyoza recently launched new items on their menu; the Teppanyaki Festival selections. Although known for their World's No. 1 Gyoza, Osaka Ohsho prided itself with serving other delectable dishes that anyone can enjoy. New addition to the variety is the teppanyaki line-up some of Manila Food Bloggers are talking about lately.

It was only late last year that Osaka Ohsho introduced their Fuwatoro Tenshin Han Sets, same goes for their new gyoza variants namely Bacon & Cheese Gyoza and the dessert variant Peanut Butter & Banana Gyoza. This year however, Osaka Ohsho step up their game by adding teppanyaki dishes, albeit offered in limited time.

Teppanyaki by definition is a style of Japanese cooking with the use of iron griddle. I have several teppanyaki dining experiences in the past, and my favorite was at Yurakuen. Although there are no live theatrics involved at Osaka Osho Teppanyaki Festival, diners are still promised a delightful dining experience.

There are total of eight dishes included in Osaka Ohsho's Teppanyaki Festival.

Salmon Bacon Teppanyaki (Php370)
Bacon wrapped pink salmon in teriyaki sauce topped with spring onions.

Of all the teppanyaki selections, this is definitely my favorite. It involves salmon and bacon. I tell you, I dubbed it as my food soulmate. The distinct taste of the salmon, the smokey flavor of bacon, and the innate savory sweetness of the sauce worked so well.

Mixed Mushroom and Bacon (Php310)
Bacon wrapped Shitake, Shimeji Brown, and Eringi Japanese mushrooms and asparagus served with Urinchi sauce.

This dish is another winner on the selection.  I am big on mushroom and I can never say not to bacon, so needless to say, this sits well with me. The earthy flavor of mushroom and its filling texture complements the savory bacon. It can be eaten as it is and still be enjoyable, but dipping it into the sauce provides more depth in flavor.

Bacon Cut Pork Belly Asparagus (Php250)
Pork belly wrapped asparagus in teriyaki sauce topped with sesame seeds.

I am not really fond of asparagus so I must say that the downright addicting bacon cut pork belly serves as the saving grace of this dish for me. One can never go wrong with Teriyaki sauce on pork hence, the combination was a winner. Instead of sesame seed toppings, what was served to us was dotted with spring onions which I don't really have a problem with.

Prawn Teppanyaki (Php495)
Seasoned prawns in butter and garlic served with wasabi mayo.

This is a very straightforward dish but its simplicity  in appearance and execution does not really mirror the delightful complexity of its flavor. I must say the wasabi mayo it comes with greatly contribute to the flavor.

Sakana Matsuri [Fish Festival] (Php420)
Sauteed pink salmon, blue marlin, and tuna served with mixed vegetables.

I was not expecting that I'll take a great liking for this dish simply because I was so caught up with my affinity for the bacon wrapped salmon. Yet, when I got a taste of it, I nearly finished one serving all by myself. I love that Osaka Ohsho decided to include three of the best tasting fishes there is. And the fact that they included some veggies was just perfect.

Ika Sugataki (Php250)
Fresh squid in spicy sauce with mixed vegetables.

I give props to them for the tenderness of the sliced squid. I rarely order squid when dining out because I have enough "tough squid" experiences to last me a lifetime. Good thing that Osaka Ohsho's Ika Sugataki is one of those few which tenderness was superb and commendable.

Mixed Shellfish (Php325)
Seasoned scallops, mussels, & clams sauteed in onion sauce with mixed vegetables.

Although the shellfish in this dish aren't really as big as I want it to be, its flavor won my heart over. It was downright savory but not overwhelming. I just love popping one meat after another because it was addicting that way.

Sake Beef (Php330)
Tender beef sauteed in sake, garlic, and butter served with coleslaw.

Originally, the beef used in this dish are sliced thinly. But during our visit, it was not available so we were served with chunks of beef instead. It was good nonetheless. Yet, I will definitely go back to try its original version because I just love sukiyaki-cut beef.
